SEO Basics

As a publisher, by the time you produce your website you fill it up with content. Be it a blog or not, you eventually wait until people come finding your site, browse through it, and give a little feedback. More so if you are eager to generate income through your online portal. Then again, not everything goes as planned. Eventually, website owners will encounter that problem regarding traffic generation and upon searching the web, they will encounter the term "SEO" multiple times.

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization". This is method of optimizing your website with keywords to become search engine friendly and how your site ranks when users search for certain keywords relating to your site. This is established by taking into account many factors of your website. Let me break it down simply so people starting could easily catch up.

Domain Name

Most search engines consider the domain name as keywords. So using those keywords and mixing them up to create the perfect domain name could be a really nice idea. If you do this, you are using "keyword-rich domain names". A website about cameras would be better off carrying a domain like "digital-cameras.com" rather than "kuzalagupagoop.com". Get the idea?

Title Tag

It is very important to reflect what your site is about in your <title> tag that reflects on the title bar of your browser. Not only is it for the browser's title bar. It's for search engine use as well.

Pages with specific topics should reflect that certain topic in the title. That way, you add more value by adding keywords of your content in your title. Search Engines recognize this greatly thinking that this certain page is talking about "Insert Title Here". Remember that searchers would probably only look at Search Titles (your Page Titles in Search Engine Results Page) and if they find any relevance in what they are searching for in yours, then a hit goes to you.

Meta Tags

In your website within your <head> tags, you will find your meta tags.

* <b>keywords</b> - be sure to fill up your meta keywords tag with keywords that are directly related to your content. If you end up putting in "free money" in your keywords in your site about making tables and chairs, chances are search engines with find your tags irrelevant with your content. You are then, sadly, downrated putting you further down the search results.

* <b>description</b> - a short description that would most likely be next to your site title in search engine results. Be precise of what that certain page is all about to invite customers to have a look see.

SEF

SEF refers to being Search-Engine Friendly particularly with your URLs. If you manually code and name your files, you can simply make a webpage about skateboard tricks like:

http://www.domain.com/skateboard-tricks.html

Don't name it like:

http://www.domain.com/0001.html

You lose keywords in there. on the other hand, if you use and CMS like Joomla, WP, or Drupal, you are bound to end up with pages ending up like

http://www.domain.com/index.php?id=com_content&article=0

Should this be the case, make sure you find the right extensions/modules that would give you search engine friendly URLs. If you do it right, you will end up with your page titles becoming your urls so CMS-produced pages about "Skateboard Tricks" will have an address like:

http://www.domain.com/category/skateboard-tricks

Image Utility

Using images is a good way to add SEO value to your site. When using images, first, make sure that your image file names are keyword-filled as well. Rather than naming them '001.jpg', try naming it like 'canon-dslr.jpg'. Aside from the file name, use the alt (specifies an alternate text for your image) and title (additional information about your image) attributes in that img tag. In the end it's ideal that you'll be using something like

<img src="/images/canon-dslr.jpg" alt="Canon DSLR" title="Cheap Canon 500D DSLR" />

Heading Tags

Maximize your headings. You have at least 6 from H1-H6 to Utilize with H1 being the most important. Enclose your page titles in <h1> tags considering this will be your topic and search engines will recognize this setting. Do not use multiple <h1> tags, it'll return bad results. You can however use multiple <h2> - <h6> tags wherein words enclosed in it will signify some importance less than that of those enclosed in <h1>.

Anchor Links

Pages in your site should at least link with each other pages. This way, spiders won't come to dead ends and circulate all the pages within your website. When you do link, use descriptive words as anchor textlinks. So when you do decide to link about Starting a Blog,

...dont do it like -
"To know more about Starting a Blog, CLICK HERE".

...rather, do it like this
"Know more about Starting a Blog"

With regard to Link Exchange Programs, when other sites link to you, try to request enclosing your Keywords related to your site in your link instead of your website name like:

<a href="http://www.domain.com">Cheap DVDs For Sale</a>.

Also try maximizing that effort and use the title attribute in links.

Strong/Bold Tags

Enclosing words in <strong> and tags would put some importance in the enclosed text just like heading tags do only far inferior compared to that.

Keyword Density

In simple terms, keyword density refers to the number of times your keywords were used within the whole article. Formula is something like:

_____Keyword Used X Times_____
Number of Words in Whole Article

The ideal keyword density is around 3.5-5% though some maximize it to 8%. If you exceed farther than that, you are considered keyword stuffing which is a big No No and will pull you down the SEO charts.

SiteMap

Be sure to have a site map that contains all the pages in your website. Crawlers would love the ease of browsing through your website easily, reflecting a search engine friendly site. You also ensure the idea that all pages are crawled and are looked up should the proper keywords used. It's ideal to have a link to your sitemap in your homepage to ensure that crawlers could find it easily.

Remember that these things makes your site "search engine friendly". Nevertheless, you should remember to take into account the fact that those who actually browse your webpages are real people and not engine bots and crawlers. It's never good to sacrifice quality content for over being simply SEOptimized. Besides, if real people like your site, chances are they'd link to you and promote it by word, which is one of the best ways to gain that wanted traffic. The very objective of maximizing SEO is, hopefully, to end up in the 1st few, if nto actual 1st, page of search engine results if the keywords match your topic. If you do it right, search engines would recognize the friendliness of your site and visitors would favor your content giving you a win-win situation.
