Shrimp and Vitamin C

I love seafood... I normally try to find seafood and fish products out in the menu whenever I enter a restaurant. Fish, crabs, squid, shrimp, etc.

As a matter of fact I just ate loads of buttered prawns a while ago. As I was eating, I asked for some orange soda and continued on munching on what I can dipping the prawns in butter. Then I remembered this one myth about prawns causing deaths.

I have been told for quite a number of times before that one should never ever eat shrimp/prawns then take vitamin C pills. Now that's not much of a problem in my case since I do not take those VitC pills at all. I do, however, am fond of drinking citrus beverages. Now these drinks pose up saying they contain VitC... which is quite alarming to my ignorant head.

Note that I have eaten prawns and drank citrus beverages so many times before and it's only after the meal that I tend to recall the warning. I AM STILL ALIVE!

This is the time that I decide to do a research, finally.

It turns out that many have been fooled by this myth. Yup folks, it's a hoax which seemed to have originated from those chain e-mails.

The e-mail claims that "prawns + vitamin c = arsenic = death". Arsenic is a basic element, as stated in our periodic table of elements. Therefore, it cannot be created by mixing or combining one thing with another. Snopes's "Shrimp, Vitamin C and Arsenic" even stated an example of how gold is a basic element like arsenic and I quote:

Just as there was no magical philosopher's stone that would enable its user to transform various worthless substances into gold, neither will the combination of shrimp and Vitamin C tablets produce arsenic.
