Generics. That's where the money is with regard to domain names. Did you know that such a domain like fat.com and chair.com is so freakin hard to acquire?
Yup! They cost a lot of money nowadays and people who surf the net just for pleasure aren't really aware of the way these sites like ask.com is valued.
What makes these domains so expensive is the fact that they are easy to remember. As a surfer, you've got that certain topic online. If you're a porno freak you'd probably go to the porno.com confident enough to find what you're looking for there, right? That's the main point on to why these generic domain names are so damn expensive and valuable.
With how money-making online is, it is important to have a site that utilizes its productivity in obtaining visitors by having an easy to remember URL to type in, regardless of the fact if these visitors actually know your site or not.
Advertisers online pay for sites that have high traffic wherein they have their ads posted throughout the pages. In return, publishers/webmasters of the sites are then paid for their service of carrying the ads on them. Rate's aren't that high and usually its like a couple of cents per 1000 exposures to unique visitors. Not much right? Yes if you're a site that doesn't have much visitors. But if you get tens of thousands of hits a day, it's really a good source of extra income.
Obtaining a generic domain name is still possible though you might need to shell out your lifetime savings if you don't own a high-profit company.
During the burst of domain names, people started buying those generic domains as an investment. Domains is like real estates... only online. So now, people are selling their owned domain names at a value so high, it'll make your pockets cry.
Back in 2006, sex.com was sold for $14M. Yes, my friends. 14Million USDollars. That's one of the biggest sales domain selling history. I'm not quite sure though if it was resold again. If it was, then no doubt, it was sold at a higher price.

Today, domain auctions are still ongoing. Sedo.com is highly known for holding such domain auctions online and people do fight and bid over the domains with bids reaching $20,000 or more.
Now do you get the idea on how valuable these domains are? It was only until about a month ago when I knew :( Sadly, I'm too late to even try to purchase a good generic domain as an investment.
If you, by any chance, were able to purchase a good generic name some time ago, now is the time to open your eyes to the possibilities of actually earning from that! Try and sell your domain name!
Or...You can always try all your known generic words and check the availability :P
